Tooth Fillings in Prairie Village, KS
In the past the primary filling material used was a mercury based material dental amalgam. Many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. We routinely do not replace silver fillings just to replace these fillings. If you have silver fillings that are functioning well, then we do not feel it is urgent to replace them. We will continue to check fillings to assure that they are functioning well and if and when they are not we will discuss the recommended treatment. The Result of High-quality Composite Fillings is a Healthy Smile
Disadvantages of Silver fillings:
Silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and can split. Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums.
Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with Tooth-Colored Restorations.
Tooth Colored “Filling” Composite Resin
This material has been developed as an off shoot of a space age material used on many NASA space flights. This is our primary material used for preparing teeth with small to moderate loss of tooth structure due to decay, chips or fractures of the tooth structure. It is a very strong durable material that can be chemically bonded to the tooth’s surface. Some of these composite resins contain fluoride which offers another level of cavity prevention for the tooth. They are applied by using a mild etching acid and liquid bonding resin and are often set or cured with high intensity halogen/quartz or Led lights. The shade of the material applied is matched to the color of the tooth. The material is adjusted and polished so your bite is comfortable and it is aesthetically pleasing. The procedure is completed in a single visit and can significantly improve the appearance of a tooth. However, since the plastic resin used is not quite as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it may chip or break easier than your natural teeth. These composite fillings may periodically need to be replaced or repaired depending on the stress placed upon the tooth as well as the care of the tooth.
The result is a beautifully restored tooth!
The American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs has concluded that both amalgam and composite materials are considered safe and effective for tooth restoration.
