What is Zoom! tooth whitening?

Zoom! is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin with the use of an Ultraviolet light source that is confined to the tooth structure only.

What can cause tooth discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include trauma, aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea or tobacco. During tooth formation consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Who may benefit from tooth whitening?

Just about anyone can benefit from tooth whitening. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. With an oral exam, Dr. Gordon can determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, including a shade assessment.

Is tooth whitening becoming more popular?

Absolutely! A bright, beautiful smile can make a big difference in one’s appearance and self-esteem. The Zoom! Whitening System makes it easier and faster than ever before.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Yes, research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom! is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

Do the results last a long time?

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. We recommend flossing and brushing twice daily, and touch-ups with Zoom! take-home gel. As part of the Zoom! procedure we will construct custom fitted bleaching trays for patients to use at home following their Zoom! treatment. Our experience indicates that in order to achieve and maintain optimal results we encourage the daily use of custom trays for a period of two to three weeks. After this time we have the patient return to our office to re evaluate their bleaching results.

Is there any difference between over-the-counter tooth whiteners and Zoom!

Yes! Consulting Dr. Gordon is always the first step to whitening your teeth safely. With the materials we use in our office, we know the strengths and formulas and their use is being professionally monitored. Over-the-counter tooth whitening strips, brush-on gels and toothpastes take weeks or months to whiten your teeth just a few shades. Zoom! is clinically proven to whiten your teeth in one office visit.

How does the Zoom! In-Office System work?

The Zoom! light-activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any colored substance while keeping the structure of the tooth unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the Hydrogen Peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth.

Is the Zoom! In-office procedure painful?

No. Patients undergoing Zoom! will start using a specially formulated toothpaste two weeks prior to the treatment. We find that this offsets any potential tooth sensitivity issues that may occur during the Zoom! treatment. During the procedure, patients can actually watch television or listen to music.

Are there any side effects?

For twenty-four hours after the treatment some people may experience temporary sensitivity with their teeth.Using Tylenol or Ibuprofen and continuing the use of the specially formulated toothpaste will cause the symptoms to subside.

How long is the procedure?

The entire procedure takes approximately two and one half hours. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by one hour of bleaching. Impressions are made for the construction of custom bleaching trays that are delivered to the patient one to two days after Zoom! treatment. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure (we recommend a professional teeth cleaning prior to the actual Zoom! Whitening session).

Is there a follow up after the in office Zoom! procedure?

The follow up involves the daily use of the custom trays made at the Zoom! appointment. We recommend that the patient wear the trays for a minimum of one hour per day up to two hours for a period of two to three weeks following initial treatment. We recommend the patient return after three weeks to re-evaluate results at which time, if the patient is satisfied with the appearance of their teeth, Dr. Gordon will recommend a monthly maintenance schedule in order for the patient to maintain their achieved results.
